Traveling from the Amazon Rainforest to the Cloud forest of the Andes, Sarah Gilberts reports from two pioneering reserves offering two very different Ecuadorian wildlife-watching experiences.

All was tranquil, save for the constant whirr of cicadas and the splasg of paddles. Suddenly, a giant river otter explided out of the water next to the dugout, screenching and barking, and crunching noisily on a fish with its bone-crushing teeth. Another popped up, then another, moving swiftly along the creek in search of food. We folloerd them until they disappeared into a tangle of false mangroves. Giant river otters are just one of many wndagered mammals you can spot at Napo Wildlife Center
